If you need good food and don't have rubies for spicy eel yet, cheese is a great alternative! Also recommend getting the burglar ring from killing 500 dust sprites in the mines whenever you have the time, yes it's very annoying but with that the serpents will drop spicy eel so many times that you won't need to buy them anymore.
