Eventually I found it just by blowing up rocks. It was in level 8 I think. I tried my hand at the higher level floors thinking that games like to do that. Perhaps try wearing a lucky ring and/or eat the lucky dish and see if that helps. This is driving me insane. The snake spine is annoying, but there's only a few artifact spots per day, so I get it.
